It is common to fear that your penis size is (or appears to be) too small to satisfy your partner during sex.
But, according to studies, most men who have a complex about the size of their penis are of normal size.
Similarly, studies suggest that many men have an exaggerated idea of what a "normal" penis size means.
The length of the flaccid penis does not reliably predict how long it will be in an erect state. If your penis is about 5 inches (13 cm) or more in an erect state, it is normal size.
The penis is considered abnormally small if it is less than 3 inches (about 7.5 cm) when erect, a condition called "micropenis."
Ads have likely led you to believe that your partner cares a lot about penis size. If this worries you, talk to your partner.
Keep in mind that your sexual relationships are more likely to improve when you understand your partner's needs and desires, not by changing the size of your penis.
Companies offer many types of nonsurgical penis enlargement treatments, often promoting them with advertisements that appear to be serious and are endorsed by "scientific" researchers.
If you look closely, you can see that the safety and effectiveness statements have not been proven.
Traders use testimonials, skewed data, and questionable before-and-after photos. Dietary supplements do not require approval from the Food and Drug Administration, so manufacturers do not need to demonstrate their safety or effectiveness.
The most publicized penis enlargement methods are not effective, and some can cause permanent damage. Here are some of the most promoted products and techniques:
Pumping can make the penis appear larger for a transient period of time. But using the vacuum pump too often or for too long can damage the elastic tissue of the penis and lead to less firm erections.
Although this technique appears safer than the other methods, there is no scientific evidence to say that it works, and it can cause scarring, pain, and disfigurement.
Some smaller studies reported increases in length from half an inch to almost 2 inches (5 cm) with these devices.
More extensive and rigorous research is needed to establish safety and efficacy.
Studies of available surgical techniques for penis enlargement have yielded conflicting results in terms of safety, efficacy, and patient satisfaction.
At best, a surgery such as a suspensory ligament division can add 1/2 inch (1 centimeter) to the appearance of the penis in a flaccid state, but does not change the actual length of the penis. In the worst case, the surgery can lead to complications, such as infection, scarring, and loss of sensation or function.
Suspensory ligament
The need for penis enlargement surgery is very rare. Surgery is usually reserved for men who have abnormal penile function due to injury or birth defect.
Although cosmetic penis enlargement surgery is offered by some surgeons using a variety of techniques, it is a controversial issue and the surgery is viewed by many as unnecessary and, in some cases, harmful.
These surgeries should be considered experimental. There are not enough studies on penis enlargement surgeries to provide an accurate perspective of the risks and benefits.
The most commonly used surgical procedure to lengthen the penis involves cutting the suspensory ligament that connects the penis to the pubic bone, and removing skin from the abdomen to place it on the shaft of the penis. When this ligament is cut, the penis appears longer because more of it is outside the body.
But cutting the suspensory ligament can cause instability in the erect penis. Sometimes the suspensory ligament cutting is combined with other procedures, such as removing excess fat from the pubic bone.
A procedure to increase the thickness of the penis consists of removing fat from a fleshy part of the body and injecting it into the shaft of the penis. However, the results can be disappointing, as some of the injected fat can be reabsorbed. This can cause a curvature or asymmetry, and give the penis an irregular shape.
Another technique to increase thickness is to graft tissue onto the shaft of the penis. The safety and efficacy of these procedures, which may even affect the potency and ability to have an erection, have not been proven.
Although there is no safe and effective way to enlarge your penis, there are some things you can do if you are concerned about the size of your penis.
Exercising regularly can make a big difference. Better physical conditioning can not only improve your appearance, it can also improve your strength and endurance during sex.
Many men feel better confirming that they are "normal" or receiving advice on how they can provide greater satisfaction to their partner without having to undergo cosmetic surgery for penis enlargement.
